Chickens are now among the most popular pets for Chinese children, such as the tot pictured above buying a chick in a bag from a vendor outside a primary school.
Like their aquatic counterparts, pet chickens don't have very long life expectancies, usually hanging on for just a few days or weeks.
Some that survive only last long enough to become dinner, and a rare few remain in the household as pets.
